What is a rahvapidu?

To understand Estonia is to understand that our culture was never meant to be hidden away in a quiet museum or restricted to formal theatre seats. A rahvapidu literally translates to a "people’s festival"—a massive, unvarnished, high-energy community dance where the barriers between performer and audience are broken down. It is a living tradition defined by playful spirit and cultural resilience.

At a rahvapidu, there are no passive spectators; if you are in the room, you are part of the event!

Get ready to experience traditional Estonian folk music at its most infectious with a live set by the legendary acoustic band Ukulele! Founded in Tallinn in 1984, Ukulele is an Estonian band whose lively, dance-friendly sound is built around four-part harmonies. Reuniting especially for KESKfEST, the group performs a mix of Estonian folk melodies, well-known favourites, and arrangements of works by Raimond Valgre and other Estonian composers. Their joyful music is made for singing along and getting the whole room onto the dance floor.

Ukulele’s return also carries a special connection to Toronto! In 1991, the band travelled to Canada to take part in the Estonian Arts Centre’s “7 Arts Retreat” (Seitse kunsti laager). During their visit, Estonia restored its independence on August 20, prompting jubilant disbelief and celebration. The following evening, Ukulele performed at Toronto Eesti Maja as Estonians around the world began to take in the significance of a moment many had waited their entire lives to witness.

Now, 35 years later, Ukulele is returning to Canada and inviting you to join in this reunion.

Dance the night away to upbeat, driving fiddle and accordion music, and experience firsthand the exact grassroots sounds that were the soundtrack to political barriers breaking down, freedom at hand. Never danced an Estonian folk step before? No worries! Our international youth delegates will be right on the floor with you showing you the steps and ensuring everyone feels right at home.
